Skepta X Nike: SkAir

Grime music and streetwear have always gone hand-in-hand, both as representatives of inner-city and urban lifestyle. Whether an MC, DJ, producer or even a supporter of the music scene, the common ground of clothing and music can often bind people together. There’s perhaps no bigger brand that represents this link stronger than Nike.

Anyone who has ever grown up in a town or city will most likely, at some point, have wanted, or had, the latest pair of Air Max trainers. They were everywhere, from people having a kick-around in the street, to people wearing box-fresh pairs to go out in. There’s no shoe in the world that plays a stronger position in the streetwear scene. From one of the most iconic in Britain – the Air Max 95, through to the 90’s and 97’s, everyone has a favourite silhouette that for them simply means something.

Grime artist Skepta has teamed up with Nike on a collaboration to redesign the Air Max 97 Ultra. Designed with inspiration from Morocco in mind, the shoe features a colour palette similar to the 1999 Nike Air Tuned Max, with it’s iridescent colours. Also featured on the shoe is a custom designed ‘Sk’ logo in the shape of a British plug.

I found Morocco, and it was perfect. Everything I wanted to feel about peace, I found it there. I like the architecture, the pastel colors, the taxis, the way that you could just go into a small little souq, open a door and it brings you into a big, massive, beautiful new world that you never would have expected. When designing the Air Max 97 Sk, we took the color palette of Morocco into consideration, but also the palette of the 1999 Air Tuned Max. That was the first shoe I ever saved up money to buy, so I wanted to bring its magic to the 97 — the magic that made me first love Air Max when I saw it as a child. – Skepta

With the Air Max 97 marking it’s 20th anniversary this year, not only is this a huge collaboration for Skepta, but also a big shoe release for Nike.

The Nike and Skepta Air Max 97 collaboration will be available for purchase on September 2nd from Nike and select retailers.
