June was an absolutely crazy month as a music lover. It seemed like there was just a stream of never-ending releases, especially within the upper echelons of the Hip-Hop world. G.O.O.D Music completed their huge rollout of Kanye-produced 7-track projects, Beyoncé & Jay-Z released their collaborative album ‘Everything is Love’, and Drake returned with his long-awaited ‘Scorpion’.
The incredible high quality of releases is something that must be taken note of, especially when it comes to production value. Looking at Nas’ ‘Nasir’ or Kanye West’s ‘Ye’ gives us a great example of perfectly executed sampling.
Che Lingo began prepping for his upcoming EP, releasing his lead single ‘Mad Angle’ with a premiere on DJ Target’s 1XTRA show. Octavian continued on his trajectory to greatness with both his solo release ‘Little’ and collaboration with Mura Masa ‘Move Me’.
Northampton local hero Slowthai dropped his latest single ‘Polaroid’, a track which many have been quick to dub the hottest track right now, which I can’t really disagree with. The track is a quick return to his well-loved raucous sound and energy, after venturing out with his incredible previous release ‘Ladies’.
It was also a great month for me in terms of new discovery, after stumbling across the work of US artist Stone Cold Jzzle, London-based Fonzie and a few other names. Stone Cold Jzzle hits hard with the bouncy, hard-hitting sound of ‘Watch Out!’, which is nothing short of windows down, slow driving summer banger. Fonzie is definitely one to watch in the UK scene, with a relaxed, chilled-out flow and great ear for beat selection, he is ready to take steps of progression with his individual style.
My stand-out, however, not even just of this month, but potentially the whole year, is Ambush with his absolute BANGER ‘Jumpy’, which results in a complete loss of limb control when it comes on loud. It’s brash, it’s confident and more than anything, it’s a fucking fun track that is just ringing off so differently right now!
