What a year for music it’s been. Both sides of the Atlantic have provided heaps and heaps of incredible sounds for us to enjoy. We’ve seen beef and drama in the case of Drake & Pusha/Kanye, huge success stories in Slowthai, as he continues to dominate ‘Ones To Watch’ lists and the airwaves with his uniquely British sound. We’ve seen a great artist hit what could be considered his crowning moment in D Double E as he released his debut album after almost 2 decades in the game, and we’ve seen a whole slew of upcoming artists demand the attention they rightfully deserve.
Dave & Fredo parked the bus at the top of the charts this year, proudly waving the flag for UK Rap music, as ‘Funky Friday’ shot to Number 1. Skepta teamed up with ASAP Rocky to dominate the Billboard chart in America, and the airwaves worldwide, with ‘Praise The Lord’, before taking on the world with an Australian and Europe-wide sell-out tour.
Chip placed diversity in sound at the top of his agenda this year as he released ‘TEN10’, an album full of so many different twists and turns throughout, including a few tracks that almost acted as addresses to the nation, begging for peace amongst the chaos.
A range of upcoming artists pressed ahead with their feet all the way down on the pedals, demanding the attention their sounds deserve. Whether we’re talking about Sam Wise, Kadiata, Ché Lingo, Temz, or Octavian, they all took the major strides needed for widespread recognition. Ché Lingo releasing not only his Charisma EP, but also touring heavily both on his own, and also as support for major international acts.
After creating a playlist every month throughout the year, I had to create one full of my favourite tracks from throughout its entirety. Now, I know a lot of people really hate ‘best of’ lists, as they always lead to someone getting upset that they didn’t feature, but this isn’t one of those. This is just a compilation of things that I personally love. Just vibe with it.
